Despite facing attempts to be taken to court in the United States, global football star Cristiano Ronaldo shared some words with non-fungible token (NFT) owners.
On January 25, the cryptocurrency exchange Binance released a video showing Ronaldo playing football with his fans and NFT owners. Ronaldo, along with Binance supporters Khaby Lame and Croatian footballer Maria Marković, trained with NFT collectors. Ronaldo offered some tips to his fans to improve their game.
In 2022, Ronaldo entered into a long-term partnership with Binance and released his first NFT collection through the exchange. The agreement included creating exclusive NFT collections and offering private communication opportunities with the global football star to NFT owners.
In a press statement sent to Cointelegraph at the time, Ronaldo expressed the importance of his connection with fans and his desire to be part of providing "unprecedented experiences" through NFTs.
Continuing the collaboration in 2023, Ronaldo launched his second NFT collection with Binance. During this process, the renowned footballer underwent a lie detector test to confirm his NFT purchases. However, some criticized Ronaldo's association with Binance's NFT branch, claiming it encouraged investment in unregistered securities. On November 27, 2023, some users filed a collective lawsuit against Ronaldo in the U.S. Florida District Court, alleging that Ronaldo "coordinated with Binance to offer unregistered securities and actively participated in their sales."
Despite the legal action, Binance users faced difficulties locating Ronaldo after the football star kept his address in Saudi Arabia confidential. On January 16, the plaintiffs submitted a petition requesting a different notification method, urging that notification to Ronaldo be made through email, X, and website broadcast in accordance with international agreements.
