Former U.S. President and current Republican candidate Donald Trump expressed his intention to make the United States the world's crypto capital if elected in November.
Speaking to the crowd at the Bitcoin 2024 conference held in Nashville, Tennessee, Trump began by expressing his great respect for the Bitcoin community. He compared Bitcoin to the "steel industry" and forecasted that Bitcoin might "one day" surpass gold, describing it as not only a technological marvel but also a collaboration and human achievement miracle.
Trump also took the opportunity to criticize his main rival in the elections, Kamala Harris, mentioning her low IQ level. He further addressed the debate over energy used by Bitcoin and artificial intelligence, defending the role of fossil fuels in energy production and reiterating his plans to roll back federal incentives for electric vehicles and charging stations.
Trump stated that he believes he would be a strong candidate for the cryptocurrency and Bitcoin communities, emphasizing that voters would be pleased with his performance if elected. He aims for the U.S. to be a pioneer in the crypto space, saying:
"If crypto is going to shape the future, it will be mined, minted, and produced in America. If Bitcoin is going to the moon as they say, I want it to be America that sends it there."
Trump wasn't the only presidential candidate to speak at the Bitcoin 2024 conference. Independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. also made notable promises regarding Bitcoin.
On July 26, Kennedy Jr. presented a Bitcoin-friendly policy plan if elected. He pledged to issue an executive order requiring the U.S. Department of Justice to transfer 204,000 BTC held by the Fed to a strategic reserve. Additionally, he promised to instruct the Treasury Department to purchase 500 BTC daily until the Fed accumulates at least four million BTC. If Kennedy's promises are fulfilled, the U.S. government would control about 20% of all circulating Bitcoin.
